Extremely rare and exceptionally hard to find, Pinus strobiformis 'Winter Sun Raye' is a new and unusual selection of Southwestern White Pine for the serious conifer collector. This is one of those cultivars that is still scarce enough that very little has been published about it, making the opportunity to grow it from an early stage particularly exciting for collectors of rare and emerging conifers. The species itself, Pinus strobiformis, is a beautiful five-needled white pine native to mountainous regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. 'Winter Sun Raye' develops soft, pliable needles arranged in bundles of five, with foliage that displays striking shades of yellow and chartreuse green. The yellow tones will display throughout the year but are more bold in the winter months and with more sun exposure. 'Winter Sun Raye' is not a cultivar you will commonly encounter in garden centers or even in most specialty conifer collections. At this stage, published information on the cultivar's ultimate size and mature habit is extremely limited. We recommend treating young plants as collector's material and allowing the plant to reveal its character over time rather than expecting a predetermined mature form.
