If you love conifers but don't have room for a full-sized fir, Balsam Fir ‘Piccolo’ is an exceptional little gem. This exceptionally compact cultivar forms a dense, rounded globe of short branches covered in tiny, rich dark-green needles. Its neat, uniform habit makes it an outstanding choice for rock gardens, troughs, containers, bonsai-style collections, and small garden spaces. ‘Piccolo’ is considerably smaller and finer in texture than the popular Balsam Fir ‘Nana’. The short branches tend to have an interesting, slightly twisted character, while prominent buds at the branch tips provide an attractive seasonal detail. ‘Piccolo’ has an interesting origin. It was discovered as a witch's broom mutation on a specimen of Balsam Fir ‘Nana’ in Germany in 1982 and was subsequently introduced to the nursery trade by the Erwin Carstens Nursery in Varel, Germany. The resulting plant is even smaller and finer than ‘Nana’, making it particularly valuable to collectors looking for miniature conifers with distinctive character.
