A rare and highly collectible dwarf Japanese maple prized for its exceptionally dense branching, dramatic foliage, and vibrant seasonal color. Mikawa Kaen, discovered by Crispin Silva, offers the same tightly layered growth habit as Mikawa Yatsubusa but with even more intense color transitions throughout the seasons. In spring, new foliage emerges with striking shades of bronze, creating a bold display that instantly draws attention in the landscape. As the season progresses, leaves mature into rich green tones with hints of warm coloring, while fall brings an outstanding finale of brilliant crimson, orange, and scarlet-red hues. ‘Mikawa Kaen’ naturally develops a compact, layered structure with densely stacked leaves that create a unique architectural appearance unlike any other Japanese maple. Its slow growth habit makes it an excellent choice for collectors, small gardens, container planting, patios, bonsai enthusiasts, or as a standout specimen in the landscape. Because of its compact size and naturally sculptural form, Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa Kaen’ adds four-season beauty and visual interest without overwhelming smaller spaces. This cultivar is especially prized among Japanese maple collectors for its rarity, texture, and exceptional ornamental value.
